Bridging Generations

ARCH 384 | studio 3b: structure system | spring 2020 | Prof. robert kerr | Partner: arturo ruiz | WSOA

This studio seeks to explicate the complex relationships between form, structure, spatial organization and tectonic qualities through precedent analysis and building design. The project is conceived in structural steel construction while The program revolves around the idea of improving food options for the residents of Downtown LA.

Bridging generations intends to minimize the social gap between the senior community and middle-aged adults to ultimately create a mutual community. This elderly community’s existing programs will expand to include onsite living spaces, interior and exterior farms, and educational spaces that will serve a wider local market.

The project is located at the west corner of Bunker Hill district. Demographic research into the adjacent historic core district and financial district show a large, under served community of middle-aged

adults who currently have no access to freshly grown food. Bridging generation meets that need while tying the larger neighborhood together.

Site Plan

Placing the outdoor farm in the center help us to distribute the buildings around the site. These are connected by a bridge which allows the user to experience the entire site and transition from one space to another.

Building Structure

Column Detail

The structure of the project helps to emphasis the contrast between the rectilinear form of the buildings and the curvilinear organic form of the bridge. The structure of the building consist on 4 sets of steel raking columns that connect to the two-way frame roof structure.

Bridge Structure

The structure of the bridge consists on transverse ribs that has been arrange in grid form. The ribs are shaped according to the cross section of the path way and spaced approximately 6 ft apart. The spacing decreases in areas of transition such as change of direction or at columns.
