ARCH 281 | Studio2a: Program and Space | Fall 2018| Prof. Mark Ericson | WSOA

The formal problem of the semester will be symmetry and its manifestation in the part to whole relationship as defined in centrally planned architecture. The starting point for the work will be the Vitruvian definition of symmetry but it will be expected to expand the understanding and use symmetry

through several readings that introduce the concept of the variant in architecture. The primary organizational mechanism will be the diagram and the primary geometric operation will be rotation.

San Giacomo degli Incurabili is a church composed of two main ovals that have been segmented to determine the space of every niche. The outside oval is two and half times bigger than the inner oval. An outside rectangle helps to determine the boundary of the spaces.

The church is composed by approximately 11 domes located on the altars and main space. The height are determined by the tallest dome in the front, which is three times its radius.

The project is composed by two ovals. The inner oval is two and half times smaller than the outer oval.

The outer form of the project is shaped by the niches showing symmetry in the short axis and difference in the long axis.
